Murmur is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band . released on April 12, 1983 by . Murmur drew critical acclaim upon its release for its unusual sound, defined by lead singer Michael Stipe's cryptic lyrics, guitarist Peter Buck's jangly guitar style, and bass guitarist Mike Mills' melodic basslines. started recording their debut album in December 1982.

while The Village Voice’s Robert Christgau declared they’re an art band, nothing more or less – and a damn. The album itself fared better, peaking at N. 6 on the Billboard 200, selling 200,000 copies across 1983 and eventually gaining a gold certification in 1991. Remarkably, the introspective Murmur also went on to beat off the challenge of g mainstream releases such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller, The Police’s Synchronicity and U2’s War to scoop Rolling Stone’s prestigious Album Of The Year Award for 1983.

This BIEM/STEMRA CD is almost identical to Murmur, but this variant does not have the price code of D: 564. Tracks 1 to 12 were originally released on vinyl LP in 1983. Recorded January 1983 at Reflection in Charlotte, NC. Mastered at Sterling Sound. Tracks 13 to 16 are bonus tracks on this CD release. Track 13 was not produced. Recorded live to two track.

Murmur is the record on which they trade that potential for results: an intelligent, enigmatic, deeply involving album, it reveals a depth and cohesiveness to . Murmur is a darker record than Chronic Town, but this band’s darkness is shot through with flashes of bright light. Vocalist Michael Stipe’s nasal snarl, Mike Mills’ rumbling bass and Bill Berry’s often sharp, slashing drums cast a cloudy, postpunk aura that is lightened by Peter Buck’s folk-flavored guitar playing. Many of the songs have vague, ominous settings, a trait that’s becoming an .

The songs on Murmur sound as if they've existed forever, yet they subvert folk and pop conventions by taking unpredictable twists and turns into melodic, evocative territory, whether it's the measured riffs of "Pilgrimage," the melancholic "Talk About the Passion," or the winding guitars and pianos of "Perfect Circle.

Everything about the album is abstruse, starting with the cover: the dense patch of kudzu on its front sleeve, the lack of names accompanying the band photos on its back. The inner sleeve identified the band only as "Bill, Michael, Peter, Mike," and even that was a leap of faith – there was no ". M " tag or anything like that. And murmur they did. . s early catalog is catnip for fan's of mondegreens, those misheard lyrics that leave us wondering why Jimi Hendrix wanted us to "'scuse me while I kiss this guy" or Elton John pined to "hold me closer, Tony Danza. Murmur's opening track, "Radio Free Europe," served notice to the band's college radio competition that they could stick it "straight up the butt, we're too good," or more likely displayed an impressionistic bit of narrative with "straight off the boat, where to g.
