Usually these kids, known as "third culture kids" (or TCKs), spend their formative years in different countries. So, it can be a struggle for TCKs to understand their identity. They often feel like they don't fit in anywhere. This is exactly what the artist Sirintip expresses on her debut album, "Tribus. Sirintip was born in Thailand to a Thai father and Swedish mother. Sirintip wanted her album to be a sort of virtual space for third culture kids: something they could claim as their own, something that could inspire them to accept their individuality. I think it's important to cherish that difference that we have as individuals who have not grown up in just one place. And not be scared of the differences that makes us the way we are," she says. Third culture kids might be an undefinable mix of their own global culture, but they're each on their own unpredictable path.

These are Third Culture Kids (or TCKs), a term coined by US sociologist Ruth Hill Useem in the 1950s, for children who spend their formative years in places that are not their parents’ homeland. Globalisation has made TCKs more common. Mostly, they are children of expatriate workers, but they can come from transnational marriages, or - as is increasingly common in Asia - attend an international school in their home country. sets them up to be more flexible and better able to cope with change. Most Third Culture Kids made their first move before the age of nine. A 2011 online survey by Denizen, a publication targeting TCKs, found most of the 200 participants made their first move before the age of nine and had lived in an average of four countries.

Third culture kids (TCK) are people raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of the country named on their passport (where they are legally considered native) for a significant part of their early development years. They are often exposed to a greater variety of cultural influences.
