In the delightfully titled Tessalation Row, Elliott Sharp takes the harsh, wonderful, mathematically themed music he had been writing for and performing with his band Carbon and transfers it to the fine string quartet led by David Soldier. It's a compelling fit; one could even argue that Sharp's ideas are more clearly limned in this format than in the rough-and-ready chaos of rock instrumentation.
Sharp's pieces for the Soldier String Quartet, led by David Soldier on electric violin, revel in string sounds: slides, tremolos, pizzicatos, plunks. 'Diurnal'' stayed with standard string-quartet sounds, building four-part counterpoint from a handful of phrases. In ''Digital,'' the players drummed on their strings, having inserted large bobby pins that made the music's cross-rhythms bonk and clank. And ''Tessalation Row,'' which used a tuning that reinforced piercing overtones, had the whole quartet playing extended slides and tremolos that sounded like a hoedown in a killer-bee colony. Blind Idiot God is a rock power trio - guitar, bass, drums - whose slow-grinding instrumentals merge heavy metal and Minimalism.
