James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American actor from Indiana. He is remembered as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955) and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in Giant (1956).

Dean James picked up the saxophone at the age of 15 after a knee injury kept him off the football field, and was soon practicing eight hours per day. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, then returned to San Francisco to play jazz with the David Eshelmans Big Band and gospel with artists like Ben Tankard, Daryl Coley and Dannie Belle Hall. By the mid-'80s, James had moved to Los Angeles and become a regarded session player and sideman, with Rob Mullins, Edwin & Walter Hawkins, Gary Taylor and others.

James Dean Bradfield talks about his solo album and the great feeling he only gets when the Manic Street Preachers play together.

James Dean, James Dean I know just what you mean James Dean, you said it all so clean And I know my life would look alright If I could see it on the silver screen. You were the lowdown rebel if there ever was Even if you had no cause James Dean, you said it all so clean And I know my life would look all right If I could see it on the silver screen. Little James Dean, up on the screen Wondering who he might be Along came a Spyder and picked up a rider And took him down the road to eternity. James Dean, James Dean, you bought it sight unseen James Dean, James Dean, you bought it sight unseen.

James Byron Dean was born February 8, 1931 in Marion, Indiana, to Mildred Marie (Wilson) and Winton A. Dean, a farmer turned dental technician. He is one of several famous and tragic figures from history to be featured on the sleeve artwork of the album "Clutching at Straws" by rock band Marillion (released in 1987). East of Eden (1955) was the only one of the three movies in which he had major roles to be released while he was alive. He is one of only five male actors to be posthumously nominated for an Academy Award as best actor in a leading role.

Stewart Stern in a letter to Mr and Mrs Winslow, James Dean’s uncle and aunt, October 12, 1955. A star goes wild in the places beyond air - a dark star is born of coldness and invisible. It hits the upper edges of our atmosphere and look! It is seen! It flames and arcs and dazzles. It goes out in ash and memory. But it’s after-image remains in our eyes to be looked at again and again.
